Can death metal be funny?

When one thinks of the death metal genre, humor isn’t the first reaction that usually comes to mind. (More like headaches, revulsion and nausea, according to past girlfriends.) And while I am not the biggest thrash fan, I do like the occasional hardcore slash-fest. But does it make me laugh?

Not until this weekend…

Metalocalypse is the story of Dethklok, a fictional Scandinavian death-metal band. Weaving a mix of Slayer-ish music with Scooby-Doo animation and Spinal Tap sensibilities, this group of knuckleheads pay tribute to all things Gwar. It’s tongue-in-cheek, bitten off.

The pedigree behind the show is impressive. James Hetfield of Metallica, King Diamond, (oh, Mercyful Fate, there you are…) and even Larraine Newman of SNL fame make guest appearances. Perhaps the oddest member of the cast? Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill.

Their songs deal with such controversial topics as birthday ditties, coffee commercial jingles, and music ‘for fish only’.

So the next time Slipknot’s ‘Pulse of the Maggots’ doesn’t float your boat, or Cannibal Corpse just isn’t the right after-dinner musical selection, slip in a DVD of Metalocalypse. (My copy fell off a truck, but I’m sure it’s available out there somewhere.)
