No News is Good News

October 23, 2007 at 12:18 pm (That's not funny...)

I often leave the local morning news on for background noise. I can sit through numerous repeats of the headlines on the off chance something interesting happens, AKA ‘Breaking News!’

I watched as the Twin Towers smoldered, then collapsed. I spent one Saturday glued to the TV as law enforcement unearthed the bodies of two beautiful girls from the backyard of Ward Weaver. Perhaps the most dramatic?

February 1986. The space shuttle disaster.

I was lying in bed, hung over as could be. I remember propping one eye open to watch the liftoff. I’d always been a space nut, since the day we were herded into the school cafeteria to watch the simulation of an Apollo flight. (I didn’t know what a simulation was. I drove myself crazy trying to figure out who took the pictures of the capsule hurtling toward the moon, but didn’t want to appear stupid.) My favorite songs were Rocket Man and David Bowie’s Space Oddity.

I’d seen enough rocket launches to know something was horribly wrong.

The same with the most recent tragedy over Texas. It was 6 AM on a weekend, and I just happened to have the news on. I spent the morning watching, remembering the first mishap.

Much like the Kennedy assassination, or 9/11, everyone remembers where they were or what they were doing when they heard the news. Another big one for me? When John Lennon was assassinated. December 8, 1980. I was at work, and my fourteen year old sister called to give me the news. I was quite the Beatles fan in those days, and it hurt.

This morning, I couldn’t get back to sleep, so I got up to do an e-mail check, and turned on the local news. They interrupted news of the California fires and a juvenile hammer beating to show the liftoff of the space shuttle. I snapped wide awake, and as always, kept my fingers crossed. I resumed net-surfing only after the booster rockets fell away neatly, like two giant road flares fizzling out.

(Deep sigh.) Be careful out there…
